This is a Fly Agaric, or Amanita muscaria. It is one of the first red mushrooms I've encountered 'in the wild' (which was a bit of grass around the perimeter of a parking lot). It was mid Autumn, and several mushrooms had begun to sprout fruit bodies along the boughs of nearby trees.
